The procedure for installing VirtualBox Extension Pack in GUI mode on Windows and macOS was previously described. However, there is another option for installing extension packs in VirtualBox: via the command line interface (CLI). VBoxManage is a CLI application for setting and managing VirtualBox and VMs through the console provided by VirtualBox. All major host operating systems, including Windows and macOS, are supported by VBoxManage.

Open the download link for the VirtualBox Extension Pack for all supported platforms on the download page of the official VirtualBox website. If you carefully read the error message, it clearly says what we need to do to fix this error. To solve this problem, you should either update the VirtualBox Extension Pack to latest version or simply disable the USB 2.0 controller support from the virtual machine's settings. I don't want to disable USB support, so I go with the first solution i.e. updating virtualbox extension pack.

The process of adding a USB device to a Windows virtual machine in VirtualBox contains two steps. First, you need to download the extension pack and install it. Then, you must enable the support for USB devices and add a device to the list.

Unlike VMWare, VirtualBox doesn't support USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices out of the box. You must download and install the extension pack and then add each USB device to the virtual machine. But once you add these devices to the list, they will become usable in the virtual machine. Make sure to add only those devices which you need in the virtual machine.

VirtualBox by default only supports USB 1.x devices. VirtualBox extension pack includes support for USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices, VirtualBox RDP and PXE boot for Intel cards. You must install the extension pack with the same version as your installed version of VirtualBox.

To check the version of your VirtualBox, open VirtualBox manager, then go to Help > About VirtualBox. Once you know the version number, go to in your web browser to download VirtualBox extension pack which ends with .vbox-extpack extension.

Once downloaded, in VirtualBox manager go to File > Preferences > Extensions. Click the add button to add VirtualBox extensions pack from your hard disk.
