Ever wanted to create your own adventure games but lack the necessary programming skills? If so, you'll appreciate GameMaker which is an easy to use card based development system which allows you to create simple adventure games with graphics, buttons, and text via a simple GUI.
It's not exactly a WYSIWYG interface but it's pretty close as GameMaker allows you to select components such as default layouts, pictures and the format of your game from a simple to use GUI.However, although GameMaker doesn't require programming knowledge, it does allow programmers to enrich their games and you'll produce much better results if you have some basic skills.
GameMaker allows those that can't program to simply draw pictures, enter text and generally build your game from the bottom up. You only have a certain file limit within which to build your game which means that anything you create using GameMaker will be quite limited.
There is no programming required, but it does have a small programming language which can be used to make better games. Just draw the pictures, type some text, click a few buttons, choose some options.
GameMaker (originally Animo, Game Maker (until 2011) and GameMaker Studio) is a series of cross-platform game engines created by Mark Overmars in 1999 and developed by YoYo Games since 2007. The latest iteration of GameMaker released in 2022.
GameMaker accommodates the creation of cross-platform and multi-genre video games using a custom drag-and-drop visual programming language or a scripting language known as Game Maker Language, which can be used to develop more advanced games that could not be created just by using the visual programming features. GameMaker was originally designed to allow novice computer programmers to be able to make computer games without much programming knowledge by use of these actions. Recent versions of software also focus on appealing to advanced developers.[1]
GameMaker is primarily intended for making games with 2D graphics, allowing out-of-box use of raster graphics, vector graphics (via SWF),[2] and 2D skeletal animations (via Esoteric Software's Spine)[3][4] along with a large standard library for drawing graphics and 2D primitives.[5] While the software allows for limited use of 3D graphics, this is in form of vertex buffer[6] and matrix functions, and as such not intended for novice users.
The engine's primary element is an IDE with built-in editors for raster graphics, level design, scripting, paths, and shaders (GLSL or HLSL).[7] Additional functionality can be implemented in software's scripting language or platform-specific native extensions.[8] In GameMaker Studio 2, you can choose whether to export the game as an NSIS installer, or a .zip file containing the game, the data.win file, and any files added under the "Included Files" tab in the editor.[9]
Versions 5.0 and below have been freeware; version 5.1 introduced an optional registration fee; version 5.3 (January 2004) introduced a number of new features for registered users, including particle systems, networking, and possibility to extend games using DLLs.[34]
The program currently holds a rating of 8.5/10 on Mod DB based on 223 user reviews; many cite its flexibility and ease of use as positives and instability, crashes, project corruption and outdated features as negatives.[59] Douglas Clements of Indie Game Magazine wrote that the program "[s]implifies and streamlines game development" and is "easy for beginners yet powerful enough to grow as you develop", though noting that "resource objects have to be gathered if unable to create" and that licensing between Steam and the YoYo Games website is "convoluted".[60]
Game Maker is an innovative application for creating mainly text-based arcade games. It supports mostly GUI and command line applications and several game engines. Game Maker is multi-platform, it's free open-source, and with many source code under GPL. For those that are interested in developing games with text only, Game Maker might be a great idea to start out with.
With the new features of Game Maker, even a beginner can create exciting 2D games that can be played on Mac, Linux, Windows, and also on consoles such as Xbox 360, Play Station, and Nintendo Wii. It's also a good idea to know what type of technology your computer has. For example, Mac and Linux only support basic text based game development. If you have a modern desktop PC or laptop, you can probably get by with Game Maker. However, if you have a Mac, Game Maker might be quite a bit harder.
For those who want to try it out without having to buy it, there are versions for Windows and Linux and also for the iPhone and iPad. Game Maker was developed by Xeikon who is the creator of many popular software packages including the flash card maker called "Flash Game Maker". Xeikon is the creator of Game Maker: studio version which can be used in conjunction with the Flash software library of the same name which is available separately. For those that want to develop more advanced applications, there is the commercial version for the iPhone and iPad.

In July 2021, we announced the formation of the Open 3D Foundation and the Open 3D Engine (O3DE), a AAA-capable, cross-platform, open-source game engine available under an Apache 2.0 license. We wanted to give game and simulation developers more choices to collaborate, customize, and control their production pipelines. We're also growing an open-source community with the Linux Foundation and industry partners. The successor to Lumberyard, O3DE is available, with a Windows installer and support for Linux. 2ff7e9595c
